US Laws
  • Michelle's Law
On October 10, 2008 the President signed "Michelle's Law" (H.R. 2851) which was written to ensure that dependent college students who need to take a medically necessary leave of absence do not lose their health insurance coverage.  The law is named after Michelle Morse who suffered from cancer and remained enrolled in college (against the advice of her doctors) so that she could keep her health insurance.

    • If you are diagnosed with an Eating Disorder and are advised to leave campus to get the treatment you need to fully recover you may be eligible under Michelle's Law to retain your health insurance coverage.
    • A written certification by the treating physician must be provided to the group health plan including a description of the terms for continued coverage under this law.
